It's been a series of body blows for us all over the last year, but this one has hit me hardest of all personally. It could just be accumulative, or the fact that my peverse nature makes me love the 'apparently overlooked' companions all the more. But more than that, there definitely was something about Mary, and the original Romana. Possibly the bravest concept for a companion to date, viewers could so easily have hated 'Fred' and the challenge she posed to the Doctor - and our expectations. But I loved the 'Who girl' who gave Uncle Tom his most magnificent dressing-down ever: "You're capricious, arrogant, self-opinionated, and you don't even know where we're going!" and in that I suspect I'm certainly not alone. I've been excitedly anticipating hearing her eternally youthful, wonderful cut glass voice again in the upcoming Big Finish season and to say the experience will now be tinged with some sadness is an enormous understatement.
