I'll join you in wishing Capaldi a smooth ride, but given his vast experience in a notoriously hard industry (to say nothing of Glaswegian heritage) I'd confidently predict he'll take whatever comes his way without even breaking stride. Certainly, the fact that he acquitted himself so well under the massive pressure, and potential horror, of Who's first (and hopefully last?) foray into reality TV, this week, bodes extremely well for the future. 'Young Danny Olsen' has gained so much gravitas and charisma over the decades - I'm excited about the programme for the first time in far too long.

Holy cow, a comment!!!

Yes, Ald, I can't believe I hung on for that long myself! As of today it's gone waaaay past credibility and I think even the hardcore might have lost heart. Which is an awful thing to really think about I suppose - it's tha same hardcore whoare clinging onto an optimistic view of a rotten situation, so their slow, numbing realisation should not be the sorce of anybody's amu sement. Particularly not any of those who actually sought to deliberately perpetuate the hoaxes to date.

Heard it said before and again today, though - it proved over two to three days at least to be (short of Capaldi's announcement) THE. MOST. EXHILIRATING. THING. CONNECTED TO DOCTOR WHO THIS YEAR!

Great article. Scholarly and serious without being dry and almost impossible to argue with - probably a lot like Old Oney and Hartnell themselves.
It's a good message for the fiftieth anniversary too - we should be celebrating it all, and not just the most recent flash and bang, or even the Who we personally grew up with.
And speaking of celebrating, we should all try and do something this year - there's still a lot of Doctor's eras still to cover in this particular series of posts, for example...

Thanks for this, Peter.
It's been a series of body blows for us all over the last year, but this one has hit me hardest of all personally. It could just be accumulative, or the fact that my peverse nature makes me love the 'apparently overlooked' companions all the more.

But more than that, there definitely was something about Mary, and the original Romana. Possibly the bravest concept for a companion to date, viewers could so easily have hated 'Fred' and the challenge she posed to the Doctor - and our expectations.
But I loved the 'Who girl' who gave Uncle Tom his most magnificent dressing-down ever: "You're capricious, arrogant, self-opinionated, and you don't even know where we're going!" and in that I suspect I'm certainly not alone.

I've been excitedly anticipating hearing her eternally youthful, wonderful cut glass voice again in the upcoming Big Finish season and to say the experience will now be tinged with some sadness is an enormous understatement.

Cheers, Al. Melodica Park always gets me. And when I'm ever down (Ernest Borgnine died today) it's there for me, with Sam and Laura smiling wincingly like indulgent and proud parents.

Good call on the McGann Shada - how could I have forgotten that one? Oh yes, that's right. Easily :)

Speaking of, big handbaggy dust-up on Gallifreybase right now betwixt Levine and Bignell over who knows more about the cancellation of Lost in the Dark Dimension. You just can't look away, I swear.
